In the third century, Roman Emperor Claudius decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families. He outlawed marriage for young men.

However, Valentine was a loving priest. He continued to perform marriages for young loves in secret.

When Claudius found out, he put Valentine into prison, and Valentine was put to death on February 14.
